If your leather belt is properly oiled, sealed, and has a proper moisture content, the tensile strength of the belt will be dramatically improved.
The same concept certainly applies to your skin. Dry skin can become cracked, leaving it exposed to the elements. Dry skin is more likely to develop cuts or other forms of wounds. Dry skin is also more likely to become damaged from the sun and other outside factors. Instead of thinking of moisturizer as a softener, think of it as a way for you to maintain strong, healthy skin.

- Emollients repair skin from within. Finally, emollients work to fill gaps left by dry, cracked, and damaged skin. This restores your skin strength from the inside out.
